Time 선정 올해의 발명품 2007,

타임에서 올해에도 어김없이 "The Best Inventions Of The Year"를 발표했습니다. 올해의 대상(?)은 iPhone에게 돌아갔군요.

제 관심은 역시 Health 분야의 제품들입니다. 작년 Gardasil이 선정된 것을 포스팅한 이후로 가다실을 찾아오시는 분들이 꽤 됩니다만 올해의 health 부분의 발명품은 무엇이 있을까요?

2) Mouse calls
3) Blood simple
4) Healing hand
5) Cancer's Crystal Ball

이렇게 다섯개가 선정되었군요. (제목만 봐서는 잘 모르시겠죠?)


그 중에서 의약품은 바로 다섯번째의 Cancer's Crystal Ball에 소개된 Agendia사의 Mamma-Print가 유일합니다. 유방암 재발을 예측하는 제품이라고 하는데 의약품이라기 보다는 진단 kit(예측 kit?)에 가깝다고 보여집니다만, 아무튼 올해 2월에 FDA 승인을 받았나보군요.

About MammaPrint®

The best tool to predict clinical outcome of breast cancer MammaPrint® is a gene expression profiling test that predicts the risk of metastasis in breast cancer patients. It is based on groundbreaking research performed at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Note: MammaPrint® analysis cannot be performed on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tumor tissue as this fixation procedure causes the RNA to degrade. The high accuracy of MammaPrint® depends on keeping the tumor RNA intact.

원리를 살짝 들여다보니 마이크로어레이를 이용한 진단인가 봅니다. 홈페이지에 소개된 것은 다음의 과정을 거친다고 되어 있군요.

After Agendia receives the fresh tumor sample:

-	Isolation of RNA
-	DNAse treatment of isolated RNA
-	Transcription into cDNA and then into cRNA
-	Fluorescent-labeling of tumor and reference cRNA
-	cRNA purification; hybridization of the cRNAs of tumor and reference sample to the MammaPrint®
-	microarrayScanning the MammaPrint® microarray and data acquisition
-	Calculation and determination of the risk of recurrence in breast cancer patients

아무튼 마이크로어레이를 이용한 기술이 상용화되었다니 기쁘군요.
